The Man in Blue

You may occasionally spot Fr Trevor wearing what looks like a blue tabard. Is he ‘moonlighting’ as a school dinners attendant or a domestic cleaner?

Actually, the garment concerned is called a Scapular. It’s sometimes worn by clergy to protect the cassock, but it’s also often worn as part of a monastic ‘habit’. In this case, it denotes that Fr Trevor is a member of the Sodality of Mary Mother of Priests – Sodalitas Mariae Matris Sacerdotum -  SMMS for short.

The Sodality is a dispersed community of Anglo-Catholic priests living under a common Rule. As Our Lady is their patron, the scapular is in her traditional colour - blue. The design deliberately resembles that of the scapular worn by trainee monks and priests at Kelham, a Monastic Theological College near Newark that closed in 1973.  As the Sodality is growing rapidly, with members around the world, you may well see other clergy similarly attired.
